East Central defeated Round Rock in girls 6A softball game on Thursday, May 11, 2023 at Marion HSEast Central sophomore Isabella Hernandez had a monster second-round playoff series against Dripping Springs, going 8-for-13 with four runs batted in.
Hernandez came through in the clutch as three of her RBIs came with two outs, and she also scored the winning run in the 10th inning of a 6-5 win in Game 3, securing the series for the Hornets. Hernandez’s strong showing in the area round of the playoffs earned her Express-News softball player of the week honors Monday, and East Central fans took it from there, casting 305 votes to make her the Express-News Athlete of the Week.
The Hornets continued their strong play this week and defeated Round Rock 4-0 on Thursday in a single-game playoff to advance to the Class 6A regional semifinals. Hernandez went 1-for-2 with a walk in the victory.Hallmark went 4-for-7 with two home runs in the Bulldogs’ sweep of El Maton Tidehaven in the first round of the Class 3A baseball playoffs. Hallmark drove in seven runs in two games, and his walkoff home run in the series opener gave Marion a 5-4 victory.
