RED BLUFF — The man who the California Highway Patrol says shot an officer, stole a patrol car and crashed into a semitrailer in Tehama County died at Enloe Medical Center on Sunday.
According to a press release issued Sunday evening by the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office, an officer with CHP’s Red Bluff office responded to a report of a disabled motorist north of Flores Avenue on Interstate 5 at 11:38 a.m. Sunday. It was north of Finnell Avenue where the patrol vehicle collided with a semitrailer, turning the semi onto its side. The patrol vehicle crashed into a nearby field and caught on fire. The release said the semi’s driver sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash.
The man who stole the CHP car was detained and taken to Enloe Medical Center, where he died. The officer, though seriously injured, is expected to survive, the release said.
