is a space for Black people across industries to reflect on their journeys to self-love, and how accepting their hair, in all its glory, played a pivotal role in this process. Each week, they share their favorite hair rituals, products, and the biggest lessons they’ve learned when it comes to affirming their beauty and owning their unique hair texture.
“Throughout most of our musical journey, we’ve documented what it’s like to live a nomadic lifestyle while touring,” Wowgr8, one half of musical duo EarthGang, tellscollaborations with other Atlanta-native artists like Future, JID, and Baby Tate make the project more of an homage to their hometown. “We wanted this project to represent what it feels like to come back home,” Wowgr8 says.
Much like their latest album, their greatest hair inspirations stem from their Atlanta roots. Wowgr8’s aunt owned a beauty salon in the city, where he was always trying out different styles. “She used to participate in hair competitions and whatnot,” he says—including the famous. “Seeing this made me feel like hair is nothing to be ashamed of,” he says.
When Olu thinks of his earliest hair memories, he remembers girls wanting to braid his hair in middle school. “Especially if you didn’t like the way it was done originally, you always knew someone at school could fix it,” he reflects. Wowgr8 recalls getting haircuts in the kitchen from his father. “I have a bunch of brothers and cousins and I remember we’d all be in the kitchen waiting our turn to get haircuts,” he says.
“They have everything you need,” he says—face and hair serums included. “In general, I love using natural sprays. We don’t really like using things with a lot of chemicals.”EarthGang has embarked on a nationwide tour that will run until November before they head to Europe. “I’m just excited to be back out there. I love performing. I’ll be touring until the end of my days, even if you have to wheel me out!” Wowgr8 says.
