Early eczema strongly predicts allergies in young adults, study finds Nutrients_MDPI eczema allergies breastfeeding allergic immune childhealth

By Pooja Toshniwal PahariaJun 20 2023Reviewed by Lily Ramsey, LLM In a recent study published in the Nutrients Journal, researchers evaluated the role of eczema in the initial three years of life on the development of allergies through young adulthood.

Existing evidence on allergy prevention by breastfeeding during early childhood is not conclusive. The GINIplus trial findings demonstrated that human milk feeding could prevent early eczema. Eczema in early life was described based on physician-reported eczema diagnoses in the initial three years, as documented by their mothers and fathers in the survey questionnaires.

Only newborns with an increased allergy risk based on a positive history of allergies in first-degree relatives with ≥1.0 parents or biological siblings who had suffered from allergies were included. The I cohort infants received extensively hydrolyzed whey , partially hydrolyzed whey , extensively hydrolyzed casein , or cow milk formula . FH- infants or those lacking parental consent for participation in the interventional study comprised the NI group.

Early-life eczema was related to eczema , asthma , and allergic rhinitis in initial adulthood; however, the association reduced with advancing age for eczema. GEE modelling confirmed that the aOR values for early eczema reduced with age among the I and NI groups' FH- participants. In contrast, the effect for allergic rhinitis and asthma did not change with time across groups.

More showers early this week, 80s with building humidity headed our wayMore showers early this week, 80s with building humidity headed our wayWe managed to salvage part of the weekend with a fairly decent day Sunday. In the days ahead, the challenge will be to maintain the low 70s and keep the sun around. An upper level low pressure system will maintain the instability for the next couple of days, allowing for a pop-up shower each afternoon. A little extra energy on…
