A judge has set a trial date for E. Jean Carroll’s defamation lawsuit brought against Donald Trump, which now includes comments he made about her during a CNN town hall last month.

U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan, who has repeatedly denied Trump’s requests to delay the civil trials involving Carroll, set the trial date in a scheduling order filed Thursday saying, “Unless this case previously has been entirely disposed of, trial of this action shall commence on January 15, 2024 absent contrary order of the Court.”A federal judge in New York City allowed the author to amend her initial November 2019 lawsuit to seek additional punitive damages.

Carroll accused Trump of raping her in a department store dressing in the mid-1990s, which the former president has repeatedly denied. Trump was found liable for defamation and sexual abuse by a Manhattan jury in May, and Carroll was awarded $5 million. During a CNN presidential town hall occurring one day after the liable verdict in the civil rape trial, Trump attacked Carroll on national television, telling moderator Kaitlan Collins the case was “fake news” and saying it was a “made-up story” created by a “wack job,” which sparked laughter from the audience.

Trump is facing several legal troubles as he navigates the presidential 2024 field. He's still polling as the GOP front-runner.Trump appealed the jury’s decision finding him liable in Carroll’s 2019 defamation lawsuit. In September 2022, New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a $250 million business fraud lawsuit against the president and his family members, with a trial scheduled for October 2023.

Trump has also failed to comply with a House committee subpoena concerning an investigation into the Capitol riot. Trump was charged with federal crimes this week related to his retaining classified documents after he left office.
