Monthly e-commerce sales have doubled since 2019: Mastercard SpendingPulse
E-commerce sales more than doubled in January compared to January 2019, up 110.1%, according to the latest data from Mastercard MA, +1.87% SpendingPulse. Digital sales grew 10.4% over last year. Mastercard SpendingPulse provides retail sales data across all payment types across the globe. U.S. retail sales were up 7.2% year-over-year, with online sales up 10.4% for the period. Restaurants , luxury excluding jewelry and apparel were particularly strong.
Department stores benefited from the clothing shopping sprees."Coming on the heels of the holidays, January typically marks a month of returns and exchanges," said Steve Sadove, senior advisor for Mastercard, in a statement."However, the strong growth across sectors reflects the optimism and eagerness for the year ahead." The Amplify Online Retail ETF IBUY, +4.31% has slumped 43.4% over the past year while the S&P 500 index SPX, +1.45% is up 17.3% for the period.
