Even if someone was bereaved as far back as 2001, it’s worth checking whether they are due a back payment.

Bereaved parents who lost their partner between April 9, 2001 and February 8, 2023 may be due a backdated payment from the Department for Work and Pensions , even if they no longer have dependent children. Eligibility for Bereavement Support Payment and Widowed Parent’s Allowance to cohabiting parents with dependent children was extended by the UK Government in February this year.

DWP opened a 12-month window for cohabiting parents to backdate their claims. Parents whose partner died before February 9, 2023 have until the end of February 8, 2024 to do so - after this date, it will not be possible to claim Widowed Parent’s Allowance and they will not get their full entitlement to backdated Bereavement Support Payments.

Alison Penny MBE, Director of the Childhood Bereavement Network said: “Time is ticking on for the thousands of families that could be eligible for a backdated payment but haven’t yet claimed. It’s crucial that we find them so they can make a decision about putting in a claim before the window closes and they miss out.

The earliest point to which payments can be backdated is August 30 2018, even if someone’s partner died before this date. To qualify for these bereavement benefits, parents must be under the State Pension age, have paid a certain amount of National Insurance Contributions and be either pregnant or have a dependent child on the day their partner died.
