The Department for Work and Pensions is facing a petition to increase a £10 payment that is made to certain benefits claimants once a year for the Christmas Bonus
The Department for Work and Pensions is facing a petition calling for an increase in the £10 Christmas Bonus payment to claimants. The petition has garnered thousands of new signatures following the Labour Party government's decision to restrict the winter fuel payment, which is worth £300.
The DWP is being urged to raise the December bonus, which is given to certain benefit recipients, in line with inflation. The bonus has remained at £10 for the past 52 years. On Thursday alone, over 1,400 people signed the petition, bringing the total number of signatures to 16,851. Shona McMahon, the creator of the petition, expressed her astonishment at the renewed interest and stated that the increase is "now more than ever needed due to the vote to make the winter fuel payment means tested only".
The guidelines also state: "If you have not claimed your state pension and are not entitled to one of the other qualifying benefits you will not get a Christmas bonus," reports Birmingham Live. Shona pointed out this week that if the bonus had been adjusted for inflation, it would now amount to £113.18.
