Welcome news for many people's finances
Christmas can be expensive at the best of times but the cost of living crisis is putting extra pressure on households this year. Some help is available.
There is an array of extra cash available, including the third instalment of the £400 energy discount, which is being handed out to all energy bill payers. December's instalment means a £67 reduction on energy bills this month. The monthly discount began in October 2022 and continues for six months, taking us to March 2023.
Another money saver scheme on the list is the Winter Fuel Payment. This is a payment targeted at older people. You can get a Winter Fuel Payment if you were born before September 26, 1956. If eligible, you could get between £250 and £600 to help you pay your heating bills and this including a Pensioner Cost of Living payment. Amounts depend upon your circumstances and living arrangements.
With energy bills a worry for most households, the next scheme could be a lifeline for some. The Warm Home Discount Scheme provides £150 off you electricity bill for winter 2022 to 2023. This money isn't paid to you, it's a one-off discount on you bill, according to the Government website. You may be able to get the discount on your gas bill instead if your supplier provides you with both gas and electricity and you’re eligible.
