The men were allegedly weren’t aware that the ammunition was going to be used in an attack by Islamic State extremistsDutch judges on Monday sentenced two men to one year and nine months respectively over ammunition provided for use in a foiled 2016 terror attack in France.
Five suspects were charged after Dutch police raided a home in the western port of Rotterdam three years ago where they seized more than 3,500 rounds of ammunition. “It has been proven that the two men worked as intermediaries in the delivery of the ammunition,” the Rotterdam district court.Three other suspects were released due to lack of evidence, while a sixth suspect was released earlier in the case.Prosecutors previously also told judges that the men were unaware that the ammunition was to be used in a terror attack, but “that the criminal underworld shamelessly shrugs off the terrorist harm that’s being done”.
The AK47 and pistol rounds were allegedly to be used in a terror attack by Islamic State group extremists in France. French police, however, in March 2016 thwarted the plot and arrested the main suspect, Reda Kriket, at an apartment in a Paris suburb.Dutch police arrested a second suspect, Anis Bahri, at his flat in Rotterdam on France’s request a few days later.The arrests came barely six months after jihadist attacks claimed 130 lives in Paris in November 2015.
