He diligently works on his swing before games and when the games start, he expects to be in the lineup. Sometimes, Dusty Baker has to pull the leash a bit though.
More than two months into the season, the Astros manager finally gave Bregman his first day off Wednesday, opting to letBefore Wednesday, Bregman had started at third base in 60 of this season's 61 games, filling in at designated hitter in the other outing. That wasn't an option this time. "He never wants a day off," Baker said."He says, 'Well, how about if I DH?’ I say, ‘No.' His dream is to play 162 games. I say, ‘Keep on dreaming.' Who knows?"
Bregman has played in at least 155 regular season games four times in his career, including last season under Baker. His career high is 157 games in 2018 when he finished fifth in American League MVP voting. The entire left side of the Astros infield was given a day of rest with Mauricio Dubón playing shortstop as Jeremy Peña was given just his second day off of the season.
