Durham Region is pausing the renovation of Newtonville Road in Clarington to make sure the recycled materials they’re using are right for the job.The idea is to reuse about 400 tonnes of glass, about six tonnes of plastics and 4.5 tonnes of polyethylene terephthalate fibres in the asphalt.
Officials note projects like this could reduce the need for aggregate materials in road construction. “We are taking the concerns brought forward on this project seriously,” said John Presta, the region’s commissioner of works. “Regional staff are working with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks as we verify the details of the recycled material used in the road base. The verification process will take time, to allow a thorough review. The paving of the road will not commence until this process is complete.
