Durham police have charged four people in connection with a trio of alleged grandparent scams. They say the money lost in these scams was more than $37,000.

Seniors were targeted in Durham Region and across the Greater Toronto Area. Each time, a senior would receive a call, claiming their grandchild had become involved in a police investigation. The seniors would be instructed to provide cash in exchange for their grandchild being let out of jail.In one instance, a senior was told they would need to make a second payment to guarantee their grandchild’s release.Kamar Minto, 20, of HamiltonAll four face charges of participating in a criminal organization, fraud and possession of proceeds obtained by crime .Though police were able to identify three victims, they believe there may be others.

If you receive any unexpected calls for money, you are urged to be extremely cautious and speak to a family member for help. In turn, you are urged to remind your older relatives of these types of scams. If you are not sure if it is a scam, hang up and call 211 before reacting.
