Doreen Hlangu and her hired hitman Mnqobi Miya were each sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder, 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances and five years for kidnapping

Hlongwa refused to pay damages. This angered Hlangu and led to the end of her relationship with him. In June 2017 she enlisted the help of a childhood friend to meet people who would kill Hlongwa.
