Durban terminal: Filipino ports giant raring to go, but Transnet leadership void could cause delays
Having kept an eye on the South African market for over 25 years now, International Container Terminal Services Inc. - one of the largest container terminal operating companies in the world - is raring to get stuck in at the Durban port where it will upgrade and expand operations at the continent's largest container terminal.
In July this year, Transnet announced ICTSI had been selected as the preferred bidder for a joint venture to develop and upgrade the flagship Durban Container Terminal Pier 2 - Transnet's biggest container terminal, handling 72% of the Port of Durban's throughput and almost half of South Africa's port traffic.
Durban is a gateway not just to the South African economy but to the southern African hinterland, but the port has grown increasingly uncompetitive and is ranked by the World Bank at 341st out of 348 container ports globally.South Africans need to be in the know if we want to create a prosperous future.
