The Newlyn Park Bayhead Rail Terminal has an embedded rail system that can accommodate seven full-block trains.
The R3.4 billion Newlyn PX Terminal at Durban Port is a good model of the public-private partnerships South Africa urgently needs to upgrade local port infrastructure, said President Cyril Ramaphosa at the official opening of the new facility on Thursday.
The facility, officially known as the Newlyn Park Bayhead Rail Terminal, consists of 640 000m2 of warehousing, rail sidings, and open storage that can accommodate seven full-block trains of 100 TEUs each daily. The Port of Durban has been beset with ailing infrastructure and inefficiencies. Despite being one of the busiest ports in the world, Durban dropped to 341st position out of 348 ports worldwide in the 2022 Container Port Performance Index by the World Bank.
“This is a good model of public-private partnership,” Ramaphosa said. “The terminal has been built on land leased from Transnet and the partnership with Newlyn will improve operational efficiency across the board,” the president noted.
