K-9 unit warrant officer Calvin Shunmugan says he helped Modack intimidate an asset manager by arresting him on trumped-up charges.
CAPE TOWN - A Durban police officer has testified how he idolised alleged underworld crime boss, Nafiz Modack, calling him the Robin Hood of Cape Town.
K-9 unit warrant officer Calvin Shunmugan said that he helped Modack intimidate an asset manager by arresting him on trumped-up charges. Shunmugan said that Modack asked him to help another State witness, Shanil Maharaj, to retrieve R2 million from the asset manager, who can only be identified as"Mister C", following a botched investment. The court heard Modack's plan was to intimidate Mister C by having him arrested for a job he wanted corrupt cop Calvin Shunmugan to do.
A visibly excited Shanmugam explained how he came to know Modack, referring to him as the Robin Hood of Cape Town.Shunmugan told the court he met Modack's alleged right-hand man, Anwar"Gustavo" Gallie, who put him in contact with Modack. He admitted that he orchestrated Mister C's arrest in April 2020 on behalf of Modack, who he said phoned him directly to order the arrest.
