In addition to the usual fair fare at the DuPage County Fair, all three days also will be filled with something new: pickleball and volleyball tournaments.
The DuPage County Fair, with carnival rides galore, starts its three-day run Friday at the fairgrounds in Wheaton.
“There is a huge amount of interest in pickleball,” said Jim McGuire, CEO of the DuPage County Fair Association and fairgrounds manager. “We have some indoor space and lot of people have contacted us to build pickleball courts there, but we haven’t done that yet. But we thought with the outdoor space, we could give it a try.”So, in the newly refurbished parking lot in the heart of the fairgrounds, there will be what McGuire calls a “pickleball stadium” with courts and stands.
There will be cash prizes for first, second and third place in the beginners, intermediate and advanced divisions. The winners will also win a purple grand champion ribbon. While the pickleball area was supposed to be temporary, there is a possibility it may stay up for Ribfest, which will take place Sept. 15-17 at the fairgrounds. McGuire said the Exchange Club of Naperville, which sponsors Ribfest, is mulling over whether pickleball will be part of that event.
Also new to the fair is an expanded DuPage County Sheriff’s Office event Saturday at which first responders will meet and greet kids. There will be safety lessons, trucks to touch and a helicopter scheduled to land.Law enforcement recruiters will be on hand to speak to anyone interested in pursuing a police career.
Fair hours are 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $10 for those 13 and older, $5 for seniors 62 and older and children 3 to 12, and free for children 2-under and for active military personnel with an ID. The fairgrounds are located at 2015 Manchester Road.
