Dune takes place several thousand years in the future, and that raises of the question of when the upcoming Dune: Part Two takes place.
Dune: Part Two will continue the story of 2021's Dune, which naturally raises speculation about the timeline of the sequel. Based on Frank Herbert's acclaimed sci-fi novel, Dune takes place in the very distant future, with several feudal houses ruling over different planets throughout the universe. Dune tells the story of the young Paul Atreides , heir to the House Atreides who comes to side with the Fremen of the desert planet Arrakis.

Dune even won numerous Academy Award nominations, including for Best Visual Effects, while Dune: Part Two was quickly greenlit following its predecessor's success.
The Dune: Part Two trailer strongly suggests that not much time has passed since Dune's ending, with Paul conversing with his Fremen companion Chani . Additionally, events unfolding in the trailer and many characters from the first Dune present in it show that the time gap between it in Dune: Part Two is negligible. In the grand scheme of the Dune universe, that also makes Dune: Part Two the exception to the rules generally applied to this world.
How Much Time Will Dune 2 Cover? Frank Herbert's Dune novels cover perhaps the most expansive time period of any sci-fi universe. Dune takes place some 20,000 years in the future, but even that only scratches the surface of the total timeframe explored in the Dune universe. Herbert's Dune prequel novels also delve into the past that led to the development of space-folding technology and the interplanetary feudal system.
Dune: Part Two will probably be primarily concerned with the journey and developing power of Paul Atreides, his alliance with the Fremen of Arrakis, and the battle for the planet itself. With that said, the vast universe of the Dune novels established by Frank Herbert opens the door for infinite possibilities to explore both the past and the future. That will all depend on the performance of Dune: Part Two, of course, but there is clearly still plenty of its universe left to explore.
