DUI suspect strikes, kills Menifee man standing by disabled SUV in Carlsbad [Breaking]
A suspected drunken driver veered off a freeway and struck a disabled SUV, fatally injuring that vehicle’s driver, late Wednesday night in Carlsbad, authorities said.
The deadly crash occurred just after 11:15 p.m. on south Interstate 5 approaching Cannon Road, California Highway Patrol Officer Hunter Gerber said in a news release. The victim, a resident of the Sun City neighborhood of Menifee in Riverside County, was standing next to his disabled Ford Explorer on the right shoulder of the freeway when the driver of a Honda Accord struck the SUV, Gerber said. The impact caused the SUV to strike the victim, who died at the scene despite life-saving efforts by CHP officers and paramedics from the Carlsbad Fire Department.
Investigators arrested the Accord’s driver, 51-year-old Carlsbad resident Douglas Lee Payne, on suspicion of several felony charges including DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, Gerber said. Jail records showed Payne was booked early Thursday morning into the Vista Detention Facility, where he remained jailed without bail Thursday night on suspicion of murder and two counts of DUI resulting in death.Gerber said the crash remained under investigation Thursday night, and anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has information about it was asked to call the Highway Patrol’s Oceanside-area office at 643-3400.
