Just one of South Africa’s three broadcasters has seen its advertising revenue decline over the past five years.
While DStv and eMedia’s advertising revenues have steadily improved over the past five years, the SABC’s has plunged.
In 2019, the public broadcaster recorded advertising revenue of R4.47 billion. That works out to a decline of 41% over five years. During that time, businesses cut their advertising expenditure in anticipation of consumers tightening their belts. The same could not be said for the SABC, whose advertising revenue dropped below DStv South Africa’s advertising revenue for the first time in 2022.
