DStv, through its SuperSport channel, boasts an extensive sports broadcasting portfolio, covering over 50,000 hours of live sports annually. This includes major international events like the Olympics, English Premier League, Champions League, and various rugby tournaments. While this dominance is attributed to exclusive broadcasting rights deals that fund sports development, increasing competition from OTT platforms like Netflix and Showmax is forcing DStv to adapt by exploring more affordable content packages and mobile-only subscriptions.

DStv’s sports offering is one of the best in the world, with over 50,000 hours of live sports coverage available annually for viewers to watch.

It covered 1,200 live events over 2,900 live broadcast hours across 19 days through eight dedicated linear channels. SuperSport’s catalogue also includes numerous domestic rugby tournaments worldwide, such as the New Zealand domestic rugby competition, Six Nations, URC, World Sevens, the English Rugby Premiership, and all Springbok matches. This is primarily due to sports bodies selling the rights to sporting events exclusively to maximise revenue.

“Removing exclusivity impacts the value of those rights, which in turn impacts the sport’s income, impacting the ability of the sport to deliver world-class performance, affecting the sport’s attractiveness to broadcasters,” they said. MultiChoice CEO Byron du Plessis recently told MyBroadband that the broadcaster is aware of this and is reassessing its content packages to help DStv compete successfully.

One way MultiChoice is doing this is by experimenting with offering South Africans more affordable means of accessing entertainment and sporting content, such as its mobile-only Showmax subscriptions.
