Matsatsantsa found the breakthrough after just six minutes as Jamie Webber delivered a corner from the right and it went through the crowd of bodies in the box all the way to the back post where Keagan Johannes, who volleyed home from close-range.
Pirates went about hurriedly searching for an equaliser and in the 21st minute, Bandile Shandu got in down the right and delivered to the back post for an unmarked Deon Hotto, who headed over the bar when he should have at least hit the target. After a slow start, Pirates won a penalty three minutes before break when Johannes brought down Kabelo Dlamini, who got in front of the Matsatsantsa midfielder. Hotto stepped up and hammered the ball down the middle.
Zakhele Lepasa was brought on just before the hour mark and almost made an immediate impact as he spun Johannes and drove into the box. The SuperSport defender stuck out a leg and appeared to bring Lepasa down but the referee waved it away.
