Citizens gave goalkeeper Darren Keet his first start of the season along with Nathan Idumba, while Maritzburg handed a debut to Tshediso Monamodi in place of Orlando Pirates loanee Bongani Sam, who was not available.
The hosts continued to assert themselves going forward but the Team of Choice, playing on transitions, had another good chance just before the half-hour mark after Tawanda Macheke guided a header over the crossbar from a set-piece delivery by Karim Kimvuidi. Looking to trouble City on counter-attacks, John Maduka injected pace with a double change on the hour-mark, as Friday Samu and Sibusiso Conco replaced Kimvuidi and Leletu Skelem.
