Drug\u002Dimpaired driving has increased for a fourth consecutive year, says Statistics Canada.
The new data, released Tuesday, says police across the country reported 7,690 incidents of drug-impaired driving violations in 2021, compared to 7,621 in 2020, according to Blacklock’s Reporter.The Statistics Canada study — “Police-Reported Crime Statistics In Canada 2021”– said other weed crimes also increased in 2021, with most involving illegal imports and exports of pot, totalling 13,560 offences.
When it legalized marijuana, the federal government also passed legislation that permitted random roadside testing of drivers. On May 2, the Department of Public Safety released a report saying marijuana was a “major contributor” to people dying in car accidents.tap here to see other videos from our team“Drug-impaired driving is a major contributor to fatal road crashes and young people continue to be the largest group of drivers who die in crashes and test positive for drugs,” said the report.
“Among those who have operated a vehicle while under the influence of cannabis, most said they did not recognize their behaviour as risky, with two in five, 39%, reporting they did not feel impaired and one in five, 23%, believing they could still drive carefully.”
