Drogba rubs shoulders with Springbok royalty
With the South African rugby team having been crowned world champions, African football icon Didier Drogba was there to witness the Springboks lift a second successive Webb Ellis trophy, while he had had a message for captain Siya Kolisi.South Africa made history this past weekend after they beat New Zealand in the 2023 Rugby World Cup to claim an unprecedented fourth title .
Captain Kolisi also etched his name in history by becoming the first South African skipper to win back-to-back World Cups, a feat only previously achieved by New Zealand's Richie McCaw in 2011 and 2015.Needless to say, it was a huge spectacle at the Stade de France and Chelsea icon Drogba seemingly couldn't miss out on the glorious occasion. The Ivorian great was spotted mingling with former Boks players Tendai Mtawarira before the final got underway.
"It is a very difficult group. Nigeria is of course one of the favourites and to have them in our group, it is going to be an exciting challenge," said Drogba when reacting to the draw. "But we are up for it. This is the beauty of a competition like AFCON, so we are ready to take on the challenge and let the best teams of this group and all the groups qualify."
Meanwhile, Drogba's national side also recently played out to a 1-1 draw with Bafana Bafana during the recent international break. For 14 free days, you can have access to the best from Soccer Laduma, KickOff, Daily Sun, TrueLove and Drum.
