CourtesyJOHANNESBURG - South Africans expressed concern on social media after a video went viral of two traffic officers claiming that eating hot cross buns would result in a positive reading from a breathalyser test.
In the video one officer is seen eating hot cross buns from retail giant Checkers before taking a breathalyser, which then registers 0.21.Several social media users were left wondering if consuming the buns during the Easter weekend would get them into trouble with law enforcement authorities. JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said motorists should not be alarmed, adding that law enforcement authorities are required to repeat any tests which have a positive reading after 20 minutes.on Wednesday assuring customers that their buns are alcohol-free.
"The false-positive reading in the video is most probably due to the yeast and fruit which may cause inaccurate breathalyser readings as was first reported in Australia in January 2019."
