South Africa’s driving licence card production process is meant to take a maximum six weeks.
The Department of Transport’s Driving Licence Card Account appears to be struggling to keep up with the demand for driving licence card renewals.
“Your driving licence card is currently in production. Do check again when it will be ready for collection,” it reads. I also contacted the Natis Online support channel to request an update and explanation for the delays, but its feedback didn’t provide any clarity. “Outa has for the past few years tried to engage meaningfully with these transport entities on various issues, but to no avail.”
Does the card machine procurement plan rely on retaining the five-year validity period for the cards? However, none of this came to fruition during his time as minister, and he left the driving licence system in chaos.
