Waymo releases few details about operations for its autonomous vehicles in metro Phoenix, including the exact number of vehicles on Valley streets.

Two car companies, Waymo and Cruise, want to expand driverless taxi service in San Francisco and other U.S. cities. But as they seek regulatory approvals, some officials are raising concerns about erratic driving behavior. If a car stalls in front of you in the morning commute, it might be easy to get annoyed with the driver. But what if the car has no driver?

The company gave that explanation in response to questions about incidents of their vehicles stalling in the middle of roads near downtown. “Causing a traffic jam will land you in the press, causing injury death will land you in court,” James Hodgson, principal analyst with ABI Research who studies the autonomous vehicle industry, said in an email.

“We have the teams and systems in place to assist the vehicle and any occupants in all types of situations, and have also trained and worked closely with many public safety officials and first responders on how to safely respond and interact with our vehicles should that be required,” a company spokesperson said in an email.
