As well as winning over viewers on Drag Race UK, having competed in the 2021 season, fans have been remembering Ward’s work as a mental health nurse, having alsoThe late drag artist from Darlington also fronted a BBC documentary called Gypsy Queen And Proud, delving into their upbringing and what it was like for them to grow up LGBT in the Traveller community.help with the rollout of the Covid-19 jab‘I can’t just sit at home, I need to be doing something,’ they thought at the time.
Ward’s BBC documentary, Gypsy Queen and Proud, first aired in January 2022, following the drag performer’s journey having been rejected by their community after coming out as gay. Explaining how the community they grew up in was ‘very binary’ in terms of men and women, Ward said that they didn’t feel like they ever ‘fitted in properly’.
When Ward watched the documentary for the first time, they admitted that it made them feel ‘uncomfortable’ because it was ‘so personal’.‘Is this going to change the community for LGBT Travellers? Well I hope so, but I actually don’t know. I don’t know if minds will change. I really hope they do,’ they stated.
