Nonprofit conducts a monthly count of homeless people living on sidewalks and in vehicles

The number of homeless encampments in downtown San Diego decreased for the second month in a row in March, but still remain at near-record highs.

The downtown homeless population reached 1,939 in January, the sixth straight month of a record high since the count began in 2012, when the highest number was about 1,100.While the February count saw the escalating trend break, it was taken on a night when 133 downtown shelter beds became available because of inclement weather, which might have skewed the number.

As examples of the fluctuation, the homeless population in East Village dropped from 781 to 665 in March, while the City Center neighborhood increased from 266 to 342. The area known as the outside perimeter, which includes the northern part of Barrio Logan, the western part of Golden Hill and Sherman Heights, saw a drop from 520 to 482 in March. Other downtown neighborhoods did not see significant changes from February to March.
