Vowing to work collaboratively with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the other premiers next week on a new health funding accord, Doug Ford says Canadians are demanding action.

“The premiers, the federal government, they just want to get a deal,” Ford told reporters Wednesday in Brampton.

Sources, speaking confidentially in order to discuss internal deliberations, say Ottawa is looking at “bilateral” deals with the provinces — similar to what was done with agreements on child care last year — as long as the money is earmarked for “shared priorities.” “We want to make sure that we get a great deal for the people of our provinces and right across the country to improve health care,” he said.

At Queen’s Park, officials emphasize they “want the same improved health outcomes” the federal government seeks — and that all patients demand. The premiers maintain that Ottawa contributes 22 per cent of health costs with the provinces on the hook for the remaining 78 per cent.
