Our weekly round-up of letters published in the Dothan Eagle.

On Oct. 9, 2023, Dothan and the Wiregrass area lost a pillar of the community in orthopedic surgeon Furnie W. Johnston, MD.

From this past July onto this September, my patriotism continued to strain as Alabama, The South and Republican officials on both state and federal levels continue undermine the Constitutional rights of its citizenry. Don't get it twisted; this is not an anti-American rant. I am an American and a Southerner, reluctantly or otherwise.

Colin Kaepernick had the right move; he followed the suggestion by fellow NFL player and Green Beret Eric Boyer to KNEEL before Old Glory to honor the fallen and to uplift those who boots are currently on the ground. In my case, I kneel and pray before Old Glory by uttering the words Jesus spoke when crucified:"Forgive them, Father, for they know not what they do." Anyone"patriot" that dares attack me in doing so only prove they drank the MAGA-Hateraide.

Dothan has an exceptional medical community and much of it started in 1962 when Dr. Johnston relocated to Dothan from Birmingham. In doing so he became the first “specialist” to come to Dothan. Other world-class physicians were to follow largely due to the presence of Dr. Johnston. The Wiregrass owes a big debt of gratitude to Dr. Johnston. If U.S. Senators would just do their jobs and decrease the national debt by $33 trillion, they could wear leisure suits for all I care.

Truth be told, it is difficult to maintain my patriotism when the rights of People of Color and women are infringed via election denial, gerrymandering, religious intolerance and repeal of bodily autonomy, the demonization of immigrants and migrants, the discarding of the elderly, mentally and physically disabled, coupled with the shunning of those in the LGBTQ+ community, particularly transgender people.
