Our weekly round-up of letters published in the Dothan Eagle.
In response to Danny Armstrong's Sept. 16 letter to the editor, I would like to point out some discrepancies as well as agreements.
Did Dr. Fauci make mistakes? Yes. But it was due to a dynamic global pandemic, the first one in 100 years. Everyone was learning as they worked. No one had a playbook. Remember, it was Trump who in 2018 dismantled the National Security Council's directive for the council to prepare for potential pandemics. They were preparing a playbook almost 18 months before the pandemic began.
The mayor called the group who supported censure a “hate group”; that the group is “1%” and that he represents the “99%.” Ala,s facts are pesky matters: this “1% group” is more than 10% of the 2020 mayoral vote, more than 20% of his votes, and nearly three times his vote margin -- Blankenship was elected by only 123 votes.
The rights of the people to oppose and even sharply attack public officials, the governed to call out the governing, is a guarantee of our Constitution and the law of the land; I stood for the people.Reading a recent letter to the editor in Oct. 14 paper, I wondered how one could live in a constant state of victimhood, racial and political anger, grievance, and discontent and have a productive happy life. It must be a miserable existence to view the world through such a distorted lens.
As far as term limits, I've been for them since the 1970s when I was in my 20s. On this Mr. Armstrong and I are in agreement. To disparage an individual who served this country for more than 53 years serving as advisor to seven Presidents and was NIAID Director for 38 years is simply wrong.Ozark Mayor Mark Blankenship was censured by our City Council, which took great courage and the words of James Madison from 1789, that representatives must have “an intimate sympathy with the people.”
The mayor yelled about omitted context, church revenge, council members listening to the 1%, and distracted department heads. Alas, all of that is his fantasy and not once did he mention his citizens.
