JON JOHNSON As the final minutes ticked off the scoreboard during the Dothan United Dragons’ 4-1 win over the Tennessee Soccer Club in the first regular-season home match in franchise history Saturday night, team president Steve Donner looked on with pride.
Close to 5,000 enthusiastic fans at Rip Hewes Stadium cheered on from start to finish for Dothan’s new pro soccer franchise in the United Soccer League 2. The Dragons showed dominance early, building a 4-0 lead in the first half before Tennessee tallied a goal right before the break. Dothan would get its second goal when Cristobal Molina boomed in a free kick from about 20 yards out 13 minutes into the match.
“They’ve been telling us the past few weeks that it was going to be a great atmosphere, but I don’t think any of us expected it to be this good,” Molina said. “Honestly, it felt like the whole town was here. Nicolas Cam scored the third goal at the 17:46 mark after making a couple of nifty moves to get around a defender and then putting a sharp kick into the back of the goal.
“This is absolutely incredible,” Reynolds said. “I just had one of the most memorable moments with my kids watching the fireworks here. These guys were absolutely incredible tonight.
