University of Maryland professor Steve Fetter, who sits on the Bulletin’s Science and Security Board, said: “Putin has repeatedly raised the spectre of nuclear use… this is not a bluff. “These nuclear threats were intended to deter direct involvement by the US and Nato, and the US and Nato have avoided direct conflict, but the possibility of nuclear use cannot be discounted., and Putin might deliberately escalate if faced with the prospect of defeat. Although a nuclear attack would serve no military purpose, and make Russia an international pariah, he might make desperate moves if no other options are available.
