While Donnie Yen has yet to appear in an Expendables movie, he once pitched an incredible spinoff idea that really needs to happen someday.

Donnie Yen once had a cool take on The Expendables and it really needs to happen. Yen is a legend of martial arts cinema, from Once Upon a Time in China II to Hero or the Ip Man movies. Sadly, his early experiences with Hollywood yielded disappointing results; he was tragically wasted in Blade 2 and proved to be one of the few reasons to watch 2000's Highlander: Endgame.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Expendables movie franchise was formed with the mission brief of uniting some of the biggest action stars in the world. While it pulled in an impressive number of icons - including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jet Li and Harrison Ford - it missed some big names too. Yen was a near-miss, as he was once set to co-star in The Expendables 2 when the sequel was set to film in China; when that deal fell through, Yen dropped out.

That's likely why there's been no update on the idea since 2015. While The Expendables franchise is fun, it hasn't lived up to its potential either. The series feels like it's homaging classic action movies rather than trying to stand alongside them, and it has little in the way of memorable setpieces itself.

Who Could Appear In Donnie Yen's Expendables If the producers of The Expendables were wise, they should reach out to Yen post-John Wick: Chapter 4 to see if he's still interested, and make his idea an official spinoff. Since Li has already appeared in The Expendables trilogy, he could be the bridge between them also.

Michelle Yeoh and Sammo Hung are must-haves, and it would be nice to see Chow Yun-fat in there too. Simon Yam, Anthony Wong or Tony Leung would be great picks to play the villain. There's also Zhang Ziyi, Tiger Chen, Wolf Warrior's Wu Jing and a near-bottomless list of great Chinese talent who could co-star. If Chan or Yen decided not to direct, putting John Woo behind the lens for this Expendables riff would be icing on the action cake.
