Carlos De Oliveira was added as a defendant on Thursday in the broader indictment against former President Donald Trump regarding his alleged mishandling of classified documents.
De Oliveira is the third person to be charged in the case, joining Trump and Walt Nauta, an aide to the former president. But who is the third defendant, and what has he been charged with?According to the indictment, De Oliveira was hired as a property manager at the Mar-a-Lago Club in January 2022 after serving as a valet for the club.
He is described as having assisted Nauta in moving 30 boxes of materials to a storage room in Mar-a-Lago on June 2, 2022, before Trump's lawyers could review the boxes to examine if there were classified materials, but the main charges against De Oliveira come from his alleged attempts to delete security camera footage.
The indictment details how De Oliveira was told by"the boss" to have security footage deleted. Nauta allegedly called a different Trump employee on Aug. 26, 2022, after the FBI raid of Mar-a-Lago, to ask about De Oliveira and was able to confirm from multiple peoplel that De Oliveira was"loyal." Trump later called De Oliveira and told him he would get an attorney.
The alleged"loyalty" of De Oliveira was tested when he participated in a voluntary interview with the FBI in January 2023, according to the indictment. He was allegedly told he could tell the agents to leave at any point and was also advised that lying to the FBI was a criminal offense. The indictment alleges he lied about his knowledge of the boxes of classified materials and having seen them.
In the superseding indictment posted to the docket on Thursday, Trump had three new charges bringing his total to 40 in the classified documents case.
