If Israel annexes large parts of the West Bank, it will be all but impossible for the Palestinians to establish a viable state
FOR MONTHS, they said, the timing was simply wrong. Led by the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, members of the Trump administration had been working for two years to draft an Israeli-Palestinian peace plan to solve a conflict that has vexed presidents for decades. But they said they wanted an opportune moment to release it.
Israel would keep control of the Jordan Valley, the breadbasket of the West Bank, and most of Jerusalem. The Palestinian capital would be established in a few grim neighbourhoods, such as Abu Dis and Shuafat, that sit on the other side of a hulking concrete separation barrier. No Palestinian refugees would be allowed to return to Israel, only to Palestine or unnamed Muslim countries that would accept up to 50,000 each.
His main challenger, Benny Gantz, who won a plurality of seats in the September election, also failed to form a coalition. Though he ran on a vaguely centrist platform in the last two elections, absorbing parts of Israel’s “peace camp”, the former army chief has moved sharply to the right in recent weeks, hoping to attract disgruntled Likud voters.
