⚠️ Don’t visit family this Christmas if you have signs of flu, UKHSA warns 📈 Cases and hospital admissions for both flu and Covid-19 are on the rise
Saffron Cordery, interim chief executive at NHS Providers, said trust leaders are expecting this Christmas to be ‘one of their darkest to date’ The UK Health Security Agency has warned people against meeting with elderly relatives over Christmas if they havewith admission rates at the highest point since the winter of 2017/18 – which saw 30,000 deaths from flu and pneumonia.
The UKHSA urged people to “avoid contact with other people if you are unwell in order to help stop infections spreading over the Christmas and new year period”. The stark warning comes after the NHS Providers boss said this Christmas is expected to be one of the “darkest to date” for the health service, as strikes threaten to aggravate an “already deeply challenging situation” caused by flu, Covid and Strep A cases.
Dr Susan Hopkins, Chief Medical Advisor at the UKHSA, said: “Hospitalisations have increased dramatically in those aged 75 and over in the past week, with admissions among children under five remaining high.”and take practical precautions to stop the flu and other diseases from spreading. “If you feel unwell try to stay home, and if you have to go out – wear a face covering in enclosed spaces. Wash your hands regularly and try to keep rooms well ventilated,” she said.
