Donations 'were naturally down (when COVID hit), but they have never recovered to pre-pandemic levels,' says Ed Moore
UBC has run a cadaver donation program since 1950, with an average of 80 to 110 people each year offering their body posthumously for teaching and research purposes. Students in medicine, biomedical engineering, dentistry and other disciplines use the bodies and tissues to learn anatomy and surgical techniques, and to test innovations and new devices, among many other uses.
“Donations were naturally down at that point, but they have never recovered to pre-pandemic levels,” said Moore. Alam thinks a lack of word-of-mouth among potential donors during the pandemic has contributed to the drop, but also the fact a lot of teaching now revolves around virtual and 3D modelling. But he notes “there is absolutely no replacement for a human donor.”Article content
