When temperatures dropped below zero in late December, plants and trees were at at their hardiest, and that the extreme cold would have done little to no damage, said Ethan Johnson, plant records curator with Holden Forests & Gardens.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Several days of unusually warm weather across northern Ohio may have some people wondering if their plants and trees will suffer adverse consequences. It’s usually much later in winter after plants and trees have lost much of their hardiness and are closer to emerging from dormancy that a prolonged warming period will bring forth buds that can get wacked by a hard freeze.
In such instances, damage can occur when tissue freezes and a plant is unable to photosynthesize sunlight that then becomes destructive, Johnson said, but conditions were cloudy during the period of frigid temperatures. Johnson said it’s hard to generalize as to when rising temperatures will have an adverse effect on budding plants. The native pussywillow, for example, buds early, he said, while the ash is among the latest.
As for most flower bulbs, some of which began to sprout over the past several days, a little green popping out of the soil shouldn’t be a problem, Johnson said. If anything, there will bit of brown at the tips of the leaves when they fully emerge. Other than that the flower should be fine.
