Decades later, it’s still one of the most unusual cases in FBI history.

When two men wearing white jumpsuits dropped off a copy machine at Harvey’s Resort Hotel and Casino in Stateline, Nevada on the morning of August 26, 1980, no one thought much of it.

As tourists evacuated, rumors began to swirl. At first, some whispered that the bomb was sheathed in lead. Others speculated that it could be worse: a nuclear threat. Or maybe, it wasn’t even real at all. An investigator examines the Harvey’s bomb, which contained nearly 1,000 pounds of dynamite and a variety of triggering mechanisms that made it virtually undefeatable.According to the typewritten note, $3 million dollars in cash was to be delivered via helicopter within the next 24 hours. Each hundred-dollar bill was to be unmarked and unbugged, and the pilot was to be alone and unarmed when he landed near the Lake Tahoe Airport in the dead of night.

In 1980, the Associated Press reported that smoke bombs with notes demanding up to $500,000 had been found in Cesar’s Palace, the Flamingo, the Aladdin, the Dunes and the MGM Grand just two years earlier. One extortionist outlined an elaborate plan to abduct Harvey Gross, the hotel’s founder, in 1972. A former butcher, Gross moved to Stateline after World War II, where he forayed into the world of gambling and opened up a wood-frame “club” with six slot machines.
