Don Mills says he sees so many positive initiatives happening across Atlantic Canada that he 'can only conclude that the future has never been brighter.' Here are a few of those reasons.

There are a number of important emerging clusters across the region that are contributing to economic growth and a brighter economic future for the region, including the bio-science cluster in Prince Edward Island being led by the PEI Bio-Alliance..I am sure that I share the hope that the coming year will be better than the last couple. Although it is hard to contemplate given the current circumstances nationally and internationally, the future in Atlantic Canada has never been better.

In fact, Prince Edward Island’s population has grown the fastest in Canada over the last decade, growing 3.7 percent in the last year alone. This population growth has had a direct and significant impact on economic growth, with P.E.I. again leading the region in GDP growth over the last decade and the country overall recently.

One of the key benefits that these newcomers bring to communities is their hard work ethic, something that many feel has been in decline in this region for some time, and a willingness to do jobs shunned by native-born Canadians. Perhaps even more important, immigrants are highly entrepreneurial, something that this region needs desperately.

These include the PEI Bio-Alliance, Propel, the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation, Volta Labs, COVE, the Genesis Centre, the Verschuren Centre for Sustainability, Innovacorp and the Destructive Labs at Dalhousie University. What is apparent from these conversations is that there have never been more start-ups being created and some have already achieved unicorn status , with more in the funnel.
