How did this province go from being Canada’s most politically united — it was almost a national joke — to this fractious, nasty, bitterly divided patch of bloodied ground between the NDP and UCP?…
As Albertans consider the choices in the April 16 election, there’s a question that goes far beyond the ballot.
The most exciting thing that happened came after the campaign, when Edmonton Journal publisher J. Patrick O’Callaghan declared the paper the “unofficial opposition.” The signpost line of that campaign came from the loser, former premier Jim Prentice: “Alberta is not an NDP province.”Since then, the NDP has been building its elaborate superstructure — carbon tax, climate policy, graduated income tax, many measures for lower and middle-income earners, minimum-wage hikes, overdue measures to protect consumers, from regulating payday loans to policing unscrupulous car sellers.
As premier, Kenney would reverse many changes by killing the carbon tax, lowering minimum wage for those under 18, cutting corporate taxes, cancelling some contracts for solar energy and a great deal more. The conservatives all labour under the belief that the NDP is alien to Alberta, more a virus than a government. Kenney endlessly calls the NDP regime “accidental.”
