The Philippines has detected its first case of Lambda variant of Covid-19, the Department of Health said on Sunday, August 15.The first Filipino infected with the Lambda variant is a 35-year-old female. The government is validating if it is a local case.The Lambda variant, first identified in Peru, was classified as a Variant of Interest by the World Health Organization in June 2021.

'This VOI has the potential to affect the transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2 and is currently being monitored for its possible clinical significance,' the DoH said in a statement.On Sunday, the Philippines logged 14,749 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 1,741,616. The number of active cases rose to 102,748.The Health department also reported 10,720 new recoveries, for a total of 1,608,528.The death toll climbed to 30,340 as 270 new fatalities were added.
