Even online dog bloggers and influencers who are ‘gifted’ products or experiences will have to declare their value as earnings

Thousands of dog lovers across Northern Ireland could find their hobby and pin money under scrutiny from the tax man thanks to new rules coming in on January 1.

And for online dog bloggers and so-called influencers, the concept of being ‘gifted’ products or experiences as earnings and income will become subject to all the rules of paying tax. And that is because the Competition and Markets Authority, the CMA, considers payment to be “any form of reward, including money, gifts of services or products, or the loan of a product”.

Their plan is designed to crack down on tax evasion and avoidance, tax errors and those who simply do not know they should be paying additional tax, including those who look after other people's pets.
