Kershaw joins Dodger teammates Will Smith and Mookie Betts on Team USA. Pool play in the WBC begins March 11.

LOS ANGELES — A healthy offseason — and maybe a desire to add another competitive experience before his playing career ends — has led Clayton Kershaw to join Team USA for the World Baseball Classic in 2023.he re-signed with the Dodgers earlier this month

. That interest was confirmed Monday when Major League Baseball announced he had been added to the Team USA roster, joining teammates Mookie Betts and Will Smith . “Obviously, it’d be a huge honor to get to do that,” Kershaw said two weeks ago. “We’re all watching USA soccer right now in the World Cup and how special that is to wear the jersey and how many people can get behind that.”

At the time, Kershaw said he had just begun his offseason throwing program — a month earlier than he was able to last year when he was recovering from a flexor tendon injury — and would talk to Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and pitching coach Mark Prior before making his decision.

Kershaw’s frequent injuries over the past five seasons might give the Dodgers’ concerns about his participation in the WBC which begins in March. Friedman said the fact that Kershaw will be able to structure his offseason to prepare for that early start offsets some of that. However, the last time Kershaw started his season early he missed six weeks with an injury in the back of his shoulder after starting one of the Dodgers’ games in Australia in March 2014.
