“If we can identify this early ... we can treat for and alleviate almost 50% of the mental illness that goes into adulthood,” Dr. John Pestian told me recently on the TechFirst podcast. “So catching it young, catching it early, and giving care is a very important part.”

where we use natural language processing in order to ... prevent veteran suicide,” Pestian says. He’s one of 25 scientists at nine different institutions running the Cincinnati project for children’s mental health. “The model we built ... it’s very big ... if you try to run that on your local computer, it’s going to take you about a decade … to compute that.”

The high-powered technology is necessary, Pestian says, because mental illness is very complex. There’s a multitude of personal, environmental, biological, emotional, social, and thought process components, and computing them all — or rather training an AI model to make sense of them all and enable accurate prediction — is hard.

One of the key resources is an unusual and more than a little unsettling collection. Doctors and mental health professionals can talk to patients, but they need to know what they’re looking for. And there are very definite signs of suicidal thinking, which a tool like this can help identify. The artificial intelligence is clearly important, but a human is essential, Pestian says, and will be in the loop, at least initially.
