“The bottom line is that junior doctors are both overworked and underpaid,” said Dr Robert Laurenson, co-chair of the British Medical Association junior doctors committee. However, it has contributed to staffing shortages and can mean that patients lack continuity of care. “The Government can’t seriously argue that pay can’t be restored whilst expenditure on agency staff expands. They’re taking us for fools. We know they can afford it and we know we are worth it.”shows that a lack of doctors and nurses in the NHS is forcing bosses to pay high rates for agency staff, with spending increasing by 20 per cent last year to reach £3 billion in England.
